Can I use borrowed airtime to buy data on mtn?
Borrowed airtime, otherwise referred to as MTN Xtratime on the MTN network can be used to buy prepaid data bundles just like you would with regular airtime. Borrowed airtime can be used for every activity on the MTN network that is chargeable with time. Meaning you can use borrowed airtime for the popular activities we normally do, which are;
- Voice calls
- Sending SMS and MMS
- Buy prepaid bundles
Also, MTN Xtratime can be used for;
- MTN Play
- MTN BackUp
- BlackBerry from MTN
- Paying for MTN Caller tunez, etc.
Borrowed MTN Xtratime cannot be transferred to other lines via MTN Share ‘n Sell.
While you can still surf the internet using borrowed airtime, browsing the internet with a data bundle is cheaper compared to when you are being charged from your airtime. So if you are looking to purchase a specific data bundle and you do not have Airtime for the purchase, you can borrow and then pay back later.
When you borrow MTN Xtratime, you will be charged a fee of 15.36% on N25 worth of Xtratime or 20.46% on other Xtratime amounts borrowed as service charges. Meaning you will only get 79.52% of N25 Xtratime and 84.64% for other Xtratime amounts credited to your Xtratime account.
For instance, if you borrow N100, after excluding the service charge of N20.46, only N79.52 will be credited to your account. You can borrow from N25 up to N5,000. What you can borrow depends on your eligibility which is very important before you can be able to borrow airtime on MTN.
MTN Xtratime eligibility criteria state that You must have a registered prepaid SIM, and must have spent at least N200 monthly on airtime for at least 3 months before you can be eligible to borrow Airtime on MTN. Also to use MTN Xtratime, your main account balance must be between N0 and N75; and you must have no unpaid balance.
To borrow airtime on MTN you need to dial the MTN Xtratime service USSD code *606#. Or call 606 and follow the voice prompt.
To pay back, first, any airtime in your main account before you borrowed will be used to partly settle Xtratime airtime owed immediately after the borrowed airtime is credited to your account. The remaining will be deducted from your next recharge, leaving the remaining balance in your main account.

Can I use borrowed airtime to buy data on airtel?
Aside from borrowing airtime for emergency calls, you can also use borrowed airtime to buy data on Airtel. Airtime borrowed from Airtel Extra Credit is usable for all Airtel services that require a charge, like calls, SMS, data bundles, etc.
Airtel extra credit allows you to borrow airtime and then pay back the borrowed amount plus service charges on your next recharge. Borrowing airtime on Airtel incurs a 15% cut of the borrowed amount as service charge.
This applies to all amounts borrowed, except for N25 which incurs a 20% cut as a service charge. The service charge is usually charged from the borrowed amount, so your next equivalent recharge will be enough to repay everything.
Subtracting the service charge, what you will get in your account when you borrow successfully will be less than the borrowed amount. The table below shows a breakdown of Airtel’s extra credit borrowable amount and credited amount.

To be eligible to borrow airtime in Airtel extra credit you must have been an active Airtel subscriber for 2 months at least, using a minimum amount of N200 monthly on the network. If you are a new subscriber to the network, you must have been on the network for a minimum of 3 months. The N200 minimum monthly usage still applies also.
The maximum amount of airtime you can borrow depends on your eligibility. The more you recharge monthly, the more you can borrow.
To borrow airtime on Airtel dial the Airtel extra credit USSD code *500# and select the amount you want to borrow. Or you can dial *500*amount#.
You can only access one airtime loan at a time. This means you have to repay what you owe before you can borrow again, even if the borrowed amount was less than what you are eligible to borrow.

Glo borrow me credit allows you to borrow airtime and then pay back later on your next recharge. Good when you want to make that emergency call and you are out of airtime. The borrowed airtime can be used to buy data on Glo as well, including other activities on the network that you can have access to with airtime.
Glo offers a direct Glo borrow me data service for borrowing data. But if you have a specific data bundle you wish to buy, then you can borrow airtime instead and buy it.
To be able to borrow airtime on Glo you must meet the eligibility criteria. You must have been a consistent user of the Glo network for a minimum period of 4 months. Only then can you be able to borrow airtime.
How do I get to be eligible for this service?
You need to have been a loyal and consistent subscriber on Glo for at least 4 months and have a good usage history.
To borrow airtime on Glo dial *321# and select desired amount from the USSD menu. Or dial *321*amount#. For example *321*50# for N50. 15% will be deducted from the borrowed amount as a service charge. You can borrow from N50 to N2,000 depending on what is available based on your eligibility.
You can borrow regardless of the amount in your main account on Glo. A good idea if you just want to top up airtime and purchase a data plan. Payback will be deducted from your next recharge after borrowing. The deduction will be made from the balance in the main account if no recharge is made after 72 hours of borrowing.
